The overview
Following Capitec’s acquisition of Mercantile Bank, I helped reimagine its online banking platform for business clients. The concept needed to address real business needs and make the opportunity tangible for executives.
The goal
Give entrepreneurs a simpler way to manage finances, people and everyday banking tasks.
My contribution
My work spanned product audits, research, personas, process mapping, wireframes, usability testing and the eventual design and development handover.

Understand how the business runs.
Surveys and research interviews explored essential financial information, frequently used features and clients’ digital infrastructure. Personas helped connect those findings to the different ways people managed their businesses.
Explore the work
Explore, then make it tangible.
I sketched three directions, reviewed them with design colleagues and developed the selected concept in Sketch. Wireframes let us refine the layout and content around client needs, business goals and technical constraints.
Explore the work

Give clients control.
Remote sessions over Microsoft Teams highlighted the need for a customisable home screen, employee permissions and seamless authorisations. Clients found the navigation intuitive; the feedback helped sharpen the features that mattered most.
Carry the system into the detail.
The final concept used the existing design-system library to keep interactions familiar and focused. My role later moved into agency handover, resolving design-system questions, and reviewing design and development work.
Where it landed.
The responsive proof of concept supported executive buy-in and set the product direction. A limited MVP was released to a small group of users after I left and the external agency took the work forward. By February 2026, Capitec had grown its business and entrepreneur client base by 71% to 456,000. With more than 1.4 million retail clients already using personal accounts to run businesses, its Entrepreneur Account extends that focus on simple, accessible banking to South Africa’s small and informal businesses.
